Since 2006, the College of Science at the University of Arizona has presented an annual Science Lecture Series, covering topics ranging from Climate Change to Cosmic Origins to The Evolving Brain.

The recently completed 13th lecture series was titled Humans, Data and Machines, and focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning, exploring how the confluence of these areas extends beyond science and consistently raises new philosophical and ethical questions.

This special 1-hour roundtable discussion is about the takeaway ideas from this year's event, and includes candid talk about the participants' greatest hopes - and fears - for the current and next eras of technological advance.

Moderated by Joaquin Ruiz, UA Vice President for Innovation & Dean of the College of Science, the participants include these members of the University of Arizona faculty:

  • Stephen Kobourov, Professor of Computer Science

  • Mihai Surdenau, Associate Professor of Computer Science

  • Nirav Merchant, Director of the Data Science Institute

  • Jane Bambauer, Professor of Law

  • Vincent Del Casino, Professor in the School of Geography and Development
