The Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System provides more than 7,000 rides a year to vets who need to get to the VA for medical appointments.
Currently, there are about 40 volunteer drivers for that program, but they are looking for more.
Volunteers must pass certain requirements to drive the VA’s vehicles.
“They are required to have a physical, which we provide. They are required to do annual training, provide proof of auto insurance, and we run a Motor Vehicle [Department] report on them,” said Deborah Brookshire with Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System.
The drivers bring veterans from across Southern Arizona to the Tucson facility.
“We bring veterans who don’t have transportation to our medical center from Tucson, Casa Grande, all over Cochise County and the Yuma area,” said Brookshire.
Drivers do not have to be veterans.
