TUSD's Mexican American Studies Program has officially been shut down and books related to the curriculum have been removed from classrooms as well. A Latino literary organization based in Houston Texas organized a caravan of authors and activists to deliver a supply of books in question to students and teachers. When Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal ruled that TUSD Mexican American Studies classes violated state law, libraries from 11 schools requested the books and district spokeswoman Cara Rene now says there are 112 copies of these books throughout the district.
