Report: Arizona’s Cancer Rate Below US Average

Annual diagnoses in state total 27,000, 14% lower than nationally; 10,000 Arizonans die of cancer yearly.

Arizona's rate of annual cancer diagnosis is 14 percent lower than the national rate, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Just more than 27,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the state, a rate of 400 per 100,000 population, the report said. The national rate is 465 per 100,000.

The report was based on data from hospitals and other health providers.

“We also found that prostate is still the leading type of cancer for males, and breast cancer is the leading type of cancer for females in Arizona," said Georgia Yee, who co-authored the report for the health department.

The report said more than 10,000 people in Arizona die from cancer each year.
