Girl Scouts sell cookies with digital technology.
The Tohono O’odham Nation is granting $30,000 to the Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona to help expand Girl Scout programs. The funding comes from Proposition 202, which requires local tribes to share 12% of their revenue from gaming compacts for government services, like education.
Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona has over 8,000 members from Pima, Cochise, Santa Cruz, Pinal, Graham, Greenlee, and Yuma counties.
The non-profit will be using the funding to help reinstate programs in Summit View and Santa Clara Elementary Schools. The groups disbanded last year, but the funding will allow them to come back and serve schools that have a majority of students from the Tohono O’odham tribe. They will also create new programs in Lawrence Intermediate School and Johnson Primary school.
The school program is geared towards helping connect girls from all different backgrounds through their Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The program is designed to teach them how to seek new challenges, maintain healthy relationships, build and maintain a strong sense of self, have positive values, and learn community problem solving.
