Voters Continue to Return CD8 Ballots at Record Pace

Latest numbers from Pima County Recorder show high return rate for early ballots

The Pima County Recorder’s office says it has already received back more than a third of the ballots it mailed to voters in Congressional District 8 last week.

Nearly 190,000 voters in Pima County received an early ballot, and 79,000 of them have already voted and sent it back. That means about 42 percent of the people who got an early ballot have already voted, a figure the Recorder's Office is calling record returns.

The recorder processes early ballots before passing them to the elections department to count on election night.

The numbers reflect Pima County only, which makes up about three quarters of the voters in the congressional district. Anyone who wants an early ballot has until Friday, June 1, to request one.

This election is to select the man who will serve the remainder of the year in Congressional District 8, the district U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords served until her resignation earlier this year to concentrate on recovering from a wound sustained in Tucson's January 8 shooting.

Voters are choosing between Giffords district office director and Democrat Ron Barber, Republican Jesse Kelly and Green Party candidate Charlie Manolakis.

The winner of the June 12 election will have to run again in the fall if he wants to seek a full two-year term in office.
