Daniel Hernandez announced Thursday that he is running for the U.S. House in Arizona's Second Congressional District.

Hernandez is hoping to replace Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick who is not running for reelection.

He is a Tucson native who has served in the Arizona House of Representatives since 2017. Hernandez is the co-founder of the legislative LGBTQ caucus.

He was hailed as hero following the January 8, 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Hernandez was an intern with Giffords and applied pressure to her head wound until paramedics took over.

Hernandez joins fellow Democratic state Representative Randy Friese and Democratic state Senator Kirsten Engel in the race.
