This week on Arizona Illustrated: A farm with a rich history, The Golden Rule Dairy; what’s behind the frightening Rise of Substance Abuse; and a tour of a Tiny Home.
The Golden Rule
Where does our food come from? With the many conveniences of modern-day life, we often forget that real food comes from growers, ranchers, and farmers, not from supermarket shelves. Arizona claims a rich agricultural tradition that continues to this day. We visit a farm in southeast Arizona with a rich history of its own.
The Rise of Substance Abuse
Substance abuse of all kinds has greatly increased during COVID 19. Stressors like unemployment, social isolation, and less access to care are just a few of the reasons why. With overdose deaths on the rise all over the US, it is more important than ever to destigmatize substance use, understand harm reduction, and consider options to improve our health care system.
New Horizons
Avai d'Amico was living in a "typical, suburban" large house in Rochester, Minnesota when he lost his job a few years ago. After thinking about the long, dreaded winters in his state and wanting to change his life, he decided to sell most of his possessions- including the five-bedroom, 2K square foot house- and purchase a 180 square foot "tiny house" on wheels. He moved to Tucson and says it's one of the best decisions he's ever made. D'Amico has a business degree, but he's found his calling in cinematography and is currently working on a pilot comedy about life in a tiny house: The Tiny House Movie.
