Arizona No. 2 in Recession Job Loss

State's workforce dropped 10%; only Nevada worse, Census Bureau says

Arizona lost 10 percent of its jobs in the recession, second worst in the country to Nevada's 12.7 percent loss, the U.S. Census Bureau says in a new report.

The Phoenix Business Journal published the report Monday, showing that between January 2008 and January 2012 Arizona lost 225,100 jobs.

Arizona, like Nevada, was hard hit by the downturn in the real estate market. Before the recession hit, Arizona was the second-fastest growing state in population and jobs.

State officials say Arizona’s economy is showing signs of life. The state's unemployment rate in January was 8.7 percent, down from 9.9 percent a year earlier but still higher than the national rate of 8.3 percent.
