Tucson voters elected the city's first Latina mayor and soundly rejected a proposition to make the Old Pueblo a sanctuary city, in the Nov. 5 election.
The mayor’s race showed a clear east-west divide in Tucson. Most precincts west of Wilmot Road voted for Democrat Regina Romero, while most precincts east of Wilmot went for independent Ed Ackerley. Green Party candidate Mike Cease did not take a majority of votes in any precinct.
Romero’s support was strongest in Ward 1, which includes downtown and the predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods south and west of downtown.
Support for a Democrat, however, did not correlate with a vote for Proposition 205, also known as the sanctuary city initiative. Those same neighborhoods joined the rest of Tucson in rejecting the ballot measure. Election data reveals many voters left the question blank.
Support for the initiative was greatest in the downtown and University of Arizona area.
Turnout showed a north-south division, higher in predominantly white neighborhoods and lower in more Hispanic neighborhoods.
