25 killed in attack on bar in coastal Mexico

Mexico's president is calling for an investigation into possible ties to government officials.

Mexico’s president said he wants federal prosecutors to investigate the possible connection between government officials and a violent attack in which assailants killed at least 25 people this week.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says federal prosecutors should look into an attack at a bar in the gulf state of Veracruz on Tuesday that may have been masterminded by a suspect who had been detained by the Marines last month and released shortly thereafter by state prosecutors.

“The least we should do is separate the authorities from the criminals because otherwise we’re not going to get anywhere,” Lopez Obrador said in a news conference on Wednesday.

The state of Veracruz has long been plagued by high levels of organized crime, and this year it was one of the first places where the president deployed the National Guard, the Associated Press reported.
