Two Mexican border cities just across from Arizona were rocked by violence Monday afternoon.
At around 3 p.m. Monday, a shootout in Agua Prieta, Sonora, the border city across from Douglas, claimed the lives of five people. Just a few hours later, four were killed in another incident in Naco, Sonora, a 20-minute drive south of Bisbee. A young boy was also wounded in the leg.
That’s according to a Monday evening release from the state attorney’s investigative police.
In Agua Prieta, investigators found two vehicles riddled with bullets with two bodies in each. In Naco, they found a vehicle with four bodies.
In a Monday evening Facebook post, Agua Prieta Mayor Jesus Alfonso Montano said that local, state and federal police, as well as the military, responded in his city. Suspects and motives are not yet known. There will be patrols in the city to maintain calm.
