A bill in Arizona protecting "dark money" donors is on its way to Gov. Doug Ducey for approval.
The bill passed the state Senate 17-13 on Thursday. It would prohibit local governments from forcing nonprofits that are active in politics from disclosing their donors.
"Coddling dark money entities leads to weak civic courage, especially of wealthy special interests. Disclosure is the only way to foster civic courage," said Sen. Juan Mendez, D-Tempe.
Supporters of the bill say the political climate is now so toxic that people who donate have to be protected.
Individual contributions to candidates or political action committees are public.
Voters in Tempe approved an ordinance forcing nonprofits to disclose their donors if the group is active politically.
