The Navajo Nation will receive $1.4 million to extend power lines to 24 homes. About a third of the tribe lives without electricity.
The San Carlos Apache Tribe will be able to renovate 30 rental units with almost $2 million. The Tohono O’odham plans to build 15 homes with $2.5 million. And the White Mountain Apache will receive the same amount to rehab 35 low-rent units, about 10 percent of the substandard housing units on that reservation.
These projects will prevent families from moving off the reservation to find housing. The funds will create temporary job opportunities as tribes will be able to hire construction workers.
In total the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded $55 million to 77 tribes across the country.
