New research from a team of UA biologists suggests that new genes are likely to appear in the evolution stage as fully developed rather than gradually taking shape. Other past research suggests that new genes develop from non-coding DNA sequences that mature over time. Professor Joanna Masel and her team found the opposite to be true based on the fact that they are likely to give rise to highly ordered proteins.
