Girls Can Learn from New UA Women's Basketball Coach

Adia Barnes, returning to coach team she once played for, holds summer camp.

The new women's basketball coach at the University of Arizona is giving some potential future Wildcats the chance to learn from her and her team.

Before coach Adia Barnes and the women Wildcats play their season opener, they’ll be on the court as the Adia Barnes Basketball Academy gives young girls a rare chance to work with the coach, her staff and UA players.

Barnes says the camp will have the standard elements of practice, skills and drills, but it's not only about dribbling and jump shots.

"You're creating the excitement and also you’re creating relationships that are central in the community," Barnes said. "So parents come, then they come to games, and it’s a great way for our players to get in touch and my coaching staff to get to know parents and people in the community."

And then, of course, there’s the big picture: "To bring some excitement back to Arizona women’s basketball."

The Adia Barnes Basketball Academy will be June 27-30 on the UA campus. Enrollment is open to girls from 2nd to 8th grades and the cost is $250.
