AZ WEEK: Hispanic Heritage - Scout Leader, Cartoonist

Plus, why Mexican-US drug trade continues and efforts to quell it continually fall short.

Arizona Week looks at Hispanic Heritage Month and two outspoken Latinos who are in the spotlight in their respective fields:

  • Producer/host Lorraine Rivera interviews Anna Maria Chavez, a native Arizonan and University of Arizona law school graduate who is now head of the Girl Scouts of America.

  • Lalo Alcarez, a political satirist and syndicated cartoonist who visted Tucson this week to speak to high scool and college students.

Also on the program, a look at the impact of drug abuse in the United States, where the demand for illicit drugs contributes to the supply side, run by the big cartels, in Latin America. Lorraine Rivera interviews:

  • Marcela Vásquez-León, a UA professor of anthropology, who teaches a course on the drug wars in Latin America.

  • Assistant Federal Public Defender Jay Sagar, whose work includes representing illegal immigrants caught crossing the border carrying marijuana and other illegal drugs.
