The U.S. Supreme Court Monday declined to hear an appeal from Arizona and Kansas over the two states' requirements that people registering to vote provide proof of citizenship.
That means Arizona residents can continue to register to vote using a federal form without having to provide proof of citizenship.
The justices rejected an appeal from Republican officials in the two states who have sought to enforce laws requiring new voters to submit a birth certificate, passport or other papers documenting U.S. citizenship.
Under Arizona law, voters must show proof of citizenship to register to vote using a state registration form, and state officials had sought to have that extended to use of a federal form.
