AZ Has More Mixed Race Marriages Than Most States

9% in state, compared with 7% nationally; growth in numbers attributed to increase in foreign-born populace.

Nine percent of Arizona marriages involve mixed-race couples, the U.S. Census Bureau reports. That compares with 7 percent nationally.

The Census Bureau reported the numbers as part of its 2011 American Community Survey of more than 3 million households.

In most states, less than 6 percent of married people are of mixed race.

In Washington, D.C., and three states - California, Hawaii and Nevada - more than 12 percent of couples are of mixed races.

The bureau attributed the growth, up from 3 percent in 1980, to an increase in foreign-born people living in the country.
