Brewer's State of State is Monday

Governor may seek more school funding, sales tax reform

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer plans Monday to lay out her vision and priorities for Arizona in her annual State of the State address.

Brewer's speech on the opening day of the legislative session will be her fourth such address. She is expected to begin speaking about 1:45 p.m.

By tradition, Brewer will be in Tucson Tuesday to deliver another version of her State of the State speech. That will be at the Westin la Paloma resort starting about 12:45 p.m.

Monday's speech is expected to be a little more traditional that her earlier versions, which were punctuated by a massive budget crisis in 2010 and the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords just before her 2011 speech.

Last year she called for the Legislature to fund the buyback of state buildings mortgaged to pay the state's bills. Legislators declined to act on that, opting instead to use surplus state revenue to set up a $450 million rainy-day fund.

Her vision for the 2013 is likely to be focused more on the state's financial recovery.

She has already called for simplifying the state's sales tax collection structure and says she wants education to get more money. She is expected to lay out a plan for the funding of her educational reform plan.

The governor's budget proposal will be sent to the Legislature on Friday.
