A coalition of governors from Mexico has put out a statement defending the country’s sovereignty and support for immigrants in the United States.
The governor of the state of Sonora, which borders Arizona, was part of the coalition.
Its statement issued Tuesday declares support for the millions of Mexicans living in the United States. President Donald Trump has promised mass deportations. Many of the unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. are from Mexico.
The statement says Mexico is a “free, independent and sovereign country," echoing Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s words after the Trump inauguration.
The governors of all six of the Mexican states that border the United States signed the statement.
