Trump cancels humanitarian parole appointments, leaving migrants in limbo

Migrants in shelters in Sonora are in limbo as the Trump administration cancels their appointments to ask for humanitarian parole at the U.S.-Mexico border — one of his first acts as president.

Betto Ramos with the Migrant Resource Center in Agua Prieta, says there have been families waiting for months at the small shelter trying to get an appointment through the CBP One app, which the new administration ended Monday.

"It is sad for the families who were waiting,” Ramos said in Spanish “It hit them very hard to learn that it’s canceled and there is no authorized way for them to enter the United States at the moment."

Families who have been at the border waiting for appointments have oftentimes waited for 8 months or more.

At the Kino Border Initiative help center in Nogales, Sonora, there were several migrant families who had attained appointments after trying for months.

Yohana Oviedo works with Kino.

"They had received an appointment confirmation for a date in February, and then it was canceled, and they weren’t given any further explanation,” she said in Spanish. “There is no other explanation nor is there another way for them to access asylum in the United States. And these families are families coming from insecurity and violence."
