The state Department of Transportation is turning to Arizona’s three state universities for innovation and research.
University of Arizona engineering professor Yao Jan-Wu is executive director of the Arizona Transportation Institute. He notes the program will put students and faculty to work solving real transportation challenges.
“The benefit of this is that all the faculty at the three state universities can work with the talented students to deal with more issues and the practical issues in our state," Yao said.
ADOT is investing $6.5 million this fiscal year in the program which also includes experts from Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University. Projects already underway include improving asphalt mixes to methods for reducing repair and maintenance costs for roadways.
