Starting early next week, a City of Tucson road improvement project will put a mile of Grant Road under construction for at least two years.
Crews will begin work at the west end of the mile-long section of Grant roughly between Alvernon and Swan on May 20. The section is classified as Phases 3 and 4 of the city’s $64 million Grant Road Improvement Project.
“This first phase of the project will include relocating underground utility lines starting at the west end of the project limits, at Sparkman Boulevard, and work east,” said Erica Frazelle, spokeswoman for the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility in a video announcing the construction.
This phase of the project includes widening Grant to six lanes, improving public transportation stops and bike lanes, and upgrading the underground storm drain system.
An indirect left turn will also be installed at Alvernon Way and Grant Road.
Lane closures due to the construction will happen at night, Frazelle said. Work is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday until the project’s completion.
The first phase of the Grant project was completed in 2013, according to the project’s website. Phases 5 and 6 include widening the section between Campbell and Country Club, but that segment’s design is still underway, and construction is not expected to start for several years.
Construction on the Alvernon and Swan section begins Monday, May 20 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
