Work is underway in Tucson on a project that will update existing bus shelters or construct new ones.

A total of 120 shelters for Sun Tran buses are being updated, and five stops will receive their first shelter.

Work is expected to be completed within six months, and will bring screens, benches, fresh paint and solar-powered lighting to the stops. It will also bring the locations into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“The aspect that’s extremely important is making improvements to accessibility, especially for wheelchair users,” said Sun Tran's Bill Davidson.

He said Sun Tran has been aware that handicap accessibility is an issue at some stops.

The project costs $450,000, 80 percent of which was covered by Federal Transit Administration money.
