Federal Judge Refuses to Block New Abortion Regulations

Rules asking to limit use of most common abortion inducing drug go into effect Tuesday; Arizona Planned Parenthood says this is unconstitutional.

A federal judge in Tucson has refused to block new Arizona rules limiting the use of the most common abortion drugs.

The ruling by Judge David C. Bury means that new restrictions will take effect Tuesday.

The rules are among the most stringent in the nation. They ban pill-induced abortions after seven weeks of pregnancy, compared with the current nine-week restriction.

Planned Parenthood Arizona and the private abortion clinic Tucson Women's Center say the rules are unconstitutional and severely infringe on a woman's ability to have an abortion. They sued to temporarily block the new rules.
