INITIATIVES ON THE CITY BALLOT THIS NOV.: Pima County Democratic Chairman Don Jorgensen and GOP strategist Sam Stone said the proposed initiative to ban photo-radar enforcement for drivers would be a test between people annoyed by the cameras and those who want safer streets. On the topic of a ballot proposition to scrap the city’s pension program: Stone said that reform was necessary, although this proposal might not be the right one; Jorgensen said passage of the initiative would be a fiscal calamity for the city.
TUCSON CONVENTION CENTER: Panelist discuss Tucson City Council's decision in seeking a private firm to run the TCC, although they had some skepticism about how much could be done with the aging facility.
BUSINESS-FRIENDLY CITY: Tucson Metro Chamber President & CEO Mike Varney said that the City Council had made some steps to encourage business in Tucson, but there were still too many hurdles in the path of local businesses. Jorgensen argued that the city was seeing a rebound in downtown and other places and was making efforts to work with the business community.
2014 CAMPAIGNS: The panel discussed announcements this week that Republican Martha McSally was testing the waters for a rematch against Congressman Ron Barber in 2014, while Republican state lawmaker Adam Kwasman was aiming to challenge Congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick.
