Former AZ Congressman Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

4 months ago Republican Rick Renzi was convicted on public corruption, money laundering, other charges.

Former Arizona congressman Rick Renzi was sentenced to 3 years in prison for public corruption, money laundering, and other charges.

U.S. District Judge David C. Bury announced decision Monday in Tucson, four months after Renzi was convicted on public corruption, money laundering and other charges.

A federal jury convicted Renzi in June on 17 of 32 counts accusing him of using his office for personal financial gain and looting a family insurance business to help pay for his 2002 campaign. He was acquitted on the remaining counts.

The 55-year-old Republican represented Arizona's sprawling 1st Congressional District from early 2003 until early 2009.

He chose not to run for re-election in 2008 while facing the federal indictment.

Authorities said that while he was in office in 2005, Renzi used his position to profit from a public land deal that also benefited his business associate, among other charges.
