In Arizona’s wide-ranging Congressional District 1, the top two fundraisers brought in a similar amount of money, but they got it from different sources.

Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick is hoping to win back the U.S. House of Representatives seat she had in 2009 and 2010. She raised $356,951.

The next highest fund raiser was Republican Jonathan Paton, who is hoping to win his first term in the U.S. House. He raised $325,861.

The newest numbers available from Federal Election Commission reflect fundraising and campaign spending for federal candidates from April 1 through June 30.

The majority of Paton’s money came from individual donors, while Kirkpatrick had a bigger haul of donations from political action committees.

Kirkpatrick raised $130,350 from PACs, while PACs gave Paton $24,000. About 93 percent of Kirkpatrick’s PAC donations came from committees based in other states. About 38 percent of Paton’s PAC donations came from committees in other states.

Kirkpatrick raised $154,065 in 575 donations from individuals. Paton attracted fewer individual donors, but got more net money from each, with 264 donations yielding $280,115.

The two candidates also differed in the amounts of money they brought in from donors in and out of Arizona. For Kirkpatrick, 437 donors from Arizona gave $108,429. The other 139 individual donors from outside of Arizona gave $45,636.

Paton had 217 donations from Arizona residents, for a total of $250,815. The other 16 donations from outside of Arizona netted $29,300 for Paton.

Paton got 82 donations of $250 or less, which add up to $14,715. He received 86 donations of $251 to $1,000, adding up to $55,900. In the highest level of donations, from $1,001 to $5,000 (the individual maximum donation amount), Paton got 96 donations worth a total of $209,500.

Kirkpatrick received 428 donations of less than $250 each, worth $48,443. She received 131 donations in the range of $251 to $1,000 worth a total of $75,314. She had 16 donations of $1,001 or more, adding up to $30,308 from that group of donors.

Kirkpatrick spent more money than Paton outside of Arizona. On expenses such as campaign consultants and other goods or services that are available in Arizona and elsewhere, she spent $45,919 out of state.

Using the same parameters, Paton spent $18,084 on out-of-state goods and services that are presumably also available in Arizona, such as printing and consulting.

The two also differed on the amount of money they had on hand at the end of the quarter. As of June 30, Kirkpatrick had $837,660; Paton had $343,861 in cash, and $10,752 in debt.

Each has a contested primary race.

Kirkpatrick and Wenona Benally Baldenegro face off in the Aug. 28 primary for the Democratic Party nomination.

Paton competes against fellow Republicans Douglas Wade, Gaither Martin and Patrick Gatti.

Baldenegro raised $18,329, spent $16,761 and has $7,998 on hand. She has $6,200 in debt.

She had 27 donors who gave $250 or less, for a total of $2,421 from that group of donors. In the middle level of donations, from $251 to $1,000, she had four donors who gave a total of $2,000.

Baldenegro did not raise any money from political action committees.

Gatti did not turn in a campaign finance report, which is allowed if a candidate is raising and spending less than $500 in a campaign for election to federal office.

Martin raised $44,025, spent $14,999 and has $86,026 left to spend. He lent his campaign $57,000 and showed a debt of $66,5078.

Martin received nine small-dollar donations worth $2,250, 16 donations of $251 to $1,000 worth $10,800. He brought in 13 donations of more than $1,001 each, worth $27,500

He did not receive any money from political action committees.

Wade raised $10,327, spent $22,926 and has $9,191 on hand left to spend. He gave himself a $15,000 loan and has $15,780 in debt.

His donations were mostly small-dollar donations, with nine of $250 or less, for a total of $1,218. He received six donations between $251 and $1,000 worth $3,580, and one large donation of $2,000.

He did not receive any PAC donations.
