AZPM Presents an Election 2010 United States Senate Republican Primary Forum with John McCain, JD Hayworth, and Jim Deakin. The primary candidates discuss the issues as they seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat. Bill Buckmaster moderates the event.
Jim Deakin is the political new comer in the race for US Senate. After serving in the Navy, Deakin moved into the private sector. After four years working for someone else, he struck out on his own founding a commercial fire safety company. Deakin is a Phoenix resident.

In 1994, J.D. Hayworth was elected to Congress where he served from 1995 to 2007 representing Arizona’s 5th Congressional district. Now after three years off, Hayworth is back in politics this time running for the US Senate as a Republican challenging John McCain. Hayworth is casting himself as the consistent conservative in the race. He has the backing of the Tea Party.
During his time in Congress, Hayworth was a member of the Ways and Means Committee, the first representative from Arizona to hold a seat on that panel. He left Congress after losing the 2006 race to current Congressman Harry Mitchell. The loss was a surprise to some because the 5th Congressional district was considered to be a Republican seat and Mitchell is a Democrat.

John McCain is currently Arizona’s senior Senator. He was first elected to the US Senate in 1987. Before that he served in the US House of Representatives between 1982 and 1986. McCain burst onto the national scene with a Presidential run in 2000. He lost the Republican nomination to eventual presidential winner George W. Bush. McCain ran again for the White House in 2008. He lost that race to Barack Obama. McCain ran his first presidential campaign as a bit of a Washington outsider, that idea lead to naming his campaign bus “The Straight Talk Express." In 2008, his running mate Sarah Palin, the then Governor of Alaska, branded the two as “mavericks." McCain has since distanced himself from the maverick moniker.
Senator McCain currently serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee; Committee on Energy and Natural Resources; Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Committee on Indian Affairs.
