Prop 400 Fails

Proposition to raise sales tax in Tucson goes down in public vote.

Proposition 400, or the Core Services Tax, would have raised Tucson’s sales tax by half a cent for five years. The extra money was supposed to go to city services such as police and fire departments. Pima County Democratic Chairman Jeff Rogers says he supported the proposition, but anticipated it wouldn’t pass. Nathan Mitchell reports:

The city is holding a press conference this afternoon to talk about the proposition’s failure and the implications on the city budget. Election Headquarters will have details of the press conference later this afternoon.
