- As many as 40 million Americans may meet the clinical conditions to qualify as addicts, according to a study from Columbia University. Food, gambling, shopping, and even exercise are examples of addictions that, when out of control, can be every bit as damaging to people's lives as drugs and alcohol. This week, Arizona Spotlight looks at the current addiction crisis beyond opioids, through the words of people who struggle to overcome their issues, a doctor who studies the changes to brain chemistry that occur in response to addiction, and a community effort in Tucson that provides support and resources to those coping with addiction crisis.
