The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office announced on Facebook that a second-grade student at Cochise Elementary School brought a firearm to school on Monday.
The seven-year-old student was discovered to have a handgun in his backpack while attending school on Monday. The school is located in Cochise, an unincorporated community roughly 15 miles southwest of Willcox.
“Another student came to the office and informed us of a potential situation,” said Karl Uterhardt, Superintendent of Cochise Elementary School District in an email. “There were no injuries and the ending result was the best outcome anyone could hope for given the circumstances.”
According to the Facebook post, sheriff's deputies met with the student and school officials and discovered a second handgun and ammunition in the student’s backpack.
Uterhardt said that no lockdown was initiated at the school and that he can’t comment on the enrollment status of the student.
“Parents and students need to know that ‘See Something, Say Something’ works,” he concluded.
CCSO said that they’ve made contact with the student’s parents and the referral was completed for the juvenile for charges of misconduct with a weapon and minor in possession of a firearm.
CCSO spokesperson Carol Capas said that the sheriff’s office has no further information or comment at this time as the investigation is still ongoing.
