A national report is delivering some good news for Arizona educators.

The National Center for Educational Statistics released its 2017 fourth and eighth grade math and reading results from an assessment program.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, measures what students know and can do in various subjects. Testing is done every two years, and state education department spokesman Stefan Swiat says the report focuses on long-term trends.

"Our results this year are encouraging because, over a 10-year stretch, we're up," he said.

Education experts call the assessment a key national measure of what students know and can do in various subjects. While the report showed better math and reading scores for Arizona kids since 2007, results were mixed over the last two years.
