The Battle to Conserve Mission San Xavier del Bac

Restoration of Mission San Xavier del Bac's deteriorated east bell tower is on hold because funding has dried up.

A previously approved $150,000 grant from the Arizona Heritage Fund to kick-start the project was abruptly canceled last year. Persistent efforts to get the funding restored have failed, according to Bern Lamplot, executive director of the Patronato San Xavier. Bob Vint, architect of the restoration work at the mission, says work must be done to ensure the mission's stability.
