Molly Kincaid said as a native of Tennessee, the Pie Party reminds her of home, and it is a good chance to contribute to organizations in the community.

When the Pie Party started 13 years ago, it was a just a casual meeting of friends that would get together to bake vegan pies and raise some money for Earth First! Journal.
It’s grown since then (and these days, non-vegan pies are permitted).
Kelly Watters, outreach coordinator at the Food Conspiracy Coop, which co-sponsors the Pie Party, expects this year more than a hundred bakers and several hundred hungry visitors will turn up.
There’s a competition as well.
"So the way it works is the public comes and purchases pie tickets and they can vote with those tickets for the non-profit they’d like to see get half the profits," she said. "And the other half is then chosen by the best of show baker."
Molly Kincaid won last year with her strawberry rhubarb pie with fresh ginger. She said, as a native of Tennessee, the Pie Party reminds her of home, and it is a good chance to contribute to organizations in the community.
"For people who maybe don’t have a lot of money to donate to charities, this is a good way to just donate a little something and eat some pie and see your friends and neighbors out there," she said.

The event goes from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m, this Sunday, May 1 at the YWCA on 525 N. Bonita Ave.
