Broadcasts from the San Francisco Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at noon this Saturday, September 19, with a performance of Susannah by Carlisle Floyd. Floyd also composed the libretto, which was based loosely on the Apocryphal tale of Susannah and the Elders. The performance will be sung in English and will run approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. Karen Kamensek conducts.

In the backwoods of Tennessee, a beautiful young woman is accused of indecent behavior after she is discovered bathing nude in a stream. Will the charismatic traveling preacher who sets his sights on her soul be her salvation, or her downfall? Carlisle Floyd’s all-American score, which beautifully evokes the work’s rural Appalachian setting, “is unabashedly neo-Romantic” according to the The New York Times.
