Matinee broadcasts from The Metropolitan Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, April 18, with a performance of Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich. The libretto was written by Alexander Preys and the composer, and is based on the novel Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov. The performance will run approximately three hours and twenty-five minutes.
Shostakovich's towering tragedy of adultery and murder stars the commanding soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek as the complicated heroine. Brandon Jovanovich is her co-consirator and lover. James Conlon conducts the work once seen as so controversial that it prompted Josef Stalin to denounce the composer.
