Tutino's Two Women - October 24, 2015

Broadcasts from the San Francisco Opera continue on Classical 90.5 at noon this Saturday with a performance of Two Women by Marco Tutino, set to a libretto by the composer and Fabio Ceresa. The story is based on the novel La Ciociara by Alberto Moravia. The performance will be sung in Italian and will run approximately two hours and forty-five minutes.

The cruelty of war, the loss of innocence and the intense love of a mother for her daughter make for moving drama in this world premiere. The novel upon which the opera's story is based was adapted into a classic movie starring Sophia Loren. As the Allies invade Italy toward the end of World War II, a strong-willed widow and her 16-year-old daughter flee Rome for the nearby mountains in a vain attempt to find safety. Nicola Luisotti conducts the lushly expressive score.
