The Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will honor former Arizona governor, Raul H. Castro.
Castro was Arizona’s 14th governor, serving from 1975 to 1977. He also served as Pima County attorney and U.S. ambassador to El Salvador, Bolivia and Argentina.
Saturday, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will honor the 98-year-old with its annual Legacy Award.
“The Legacy Award is generally selected for someone who’s had significant impact in our region, said Lea Márquez-Peterson, president of the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "Prior award winners have been Hispanic, or have focused on the Hispanic market or international trade, some of the priorities that we hold and some of the initiatives we work on from the Hispanic Chamber perspective.”
Castro was born in Cananea, Sonora, and immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 10 years old.
He’s a graduate of the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, and received his undergraduate degree from Arizona State Teacher’s College, which is now Northern Arizona University.
He is the only person of Mexican descent to be Arizona governor.
