Andy Thurlow is both a sculptor and a musician. His artistic creations, assembled from pipes, cables and heavy springs, resemble artifacts left from the Industrial Revolution.
“I started recording them to see how they sounded,” Thurlow says. “Then I stopped liking regular instruments; they sounded less organic.”
Thurlow says that in August 2002, his instruments were played by a large group of people under the name Anarchestra for the first time. Now, during performances in Tucson, the public is invited to interact with and play the instruments.
Thurlow says his purpose is to create a modern folk music that is relevant to the community in which he lives.
“It’s kind of tribal,” he says. “I think it’s important that we play music together, as a community, and not see it as ‘specialists’ and ‘recipients.’”
