Thousands took to the streets in honor of lost loved ones in the 21st Annual All Souls Procession Sunday night. The funerary march through downtown featured the usual painted faces, elaborate costumes, dancing and flames, but there were a few timely touches as well: among them, a sculpture of a BP oil-sodden pelican and a sign bearing the latest counts of soldiers killed in Iraq.
The 2010 ceremony marked the last time that All Souls will end at the Franklin Street Docks on the corner of 6th Street and Stone Avenue. The event and its urn-burning finale have outgrown the site, said Nadia Hagen, the procession's artistic director, when she spoke with AZPM's Luis Carrión last week. There is no word yet on the finale location for next year's ceremony.
