An international panel of researchers will present some of the latest information on medical marijuana at the University of Arizona Wednesday.

The UA is hosting an Interdisciplinary Cannabis Symposium at the College of Medicine. Organizers call it the first conference of its kind held in Arizona.

UA pharmacologist Todd Vanderah notes the experts invited to the one-day symposium can feel free to speak about medicinal cannabis without any political baggage.

"We're not here to say they are the greatest things in the world, but we actually want to understand medical marijuana, cannabis and cannabinoids, much better," he said. "So, we can make better decisions where they can be used, whether they should be used, and how they can be used."

The presenters will focus on how marijuana works with human biology and physiology, and its effectiveness as a treatment for certain mental health issues. Marijuana is prohibited by federal law, but its medicinal use is approved in Arizona with a doctor's recommendation.
