Ed Group President: Walkout Duration Depends on Response

Governor, Legislature and state action will be "barometer" of the walkout.

Thousands of teachers are expected to walkout tomorrow to protest for increased pay and education funding. It was announced a week ago, but how long it will last is not known.

"How quickly is the governor going to act? How quickly is the Legislature going to act? How many Arizonans, not just educators, but Arizonans are going to demand better of their government? And I think those are the barometers of how long this is going to last," said Jason Freed, president of the Tucson Education Association.

Teachers are demanding not only a pay raise for themselves but also support staff. They also want money for classrooms and infrastructure.

The teachers, along with legislative Democrats and some Republicans, say Gov. Doug Ducey's pay raise plan does not have a sustainable funding source.

Freed made his comments on Arizona 360, which airs Friday night on PBS 6.
