Sales Tax for Roads? You Can Weigh In

Pima County committee holds hearings on sales-tax proposal for fixing bad roads.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors wants to find out whether you think it should add a sales tax to pay for road work.

There is already a county-wide sales tax to pay for new road work or adding more lanes to existing roads, and the supervisors are weighing a proposal to add another half-cent sales tax to pay to fix roads that are in bad shape.

Supervisor Steve Christy proposed the idea, and state law allows the board to add a half-cent sales tax, if the board unanimously supports the proposal. That's why the county is seeking feedback now on the idea.

A series of meetings are scheduled to gather comments, including the answers to these questions:

  • Should the supervisors add a half-cent sales tax for road repair throughout the county, including in cities and towns?

  • Should the supervisors consider using sales tax revenue to reduce property taxes?

  • Should the supervisors consider a temporary or permanent sales tax?

Meetings are from 6 to 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted:
