Public Meeting on Widening Broadway Boulevard Thursday

Tucson transportation officials ask for comment, concerns from residents

Broadway expansion

Details of a plan to widen Broadway Boulevard just east of downtown Tucson will be discussed Thursday night at a public meeting.

Expanding Broadway between Euclid Avenue and County Club Road has been a hotly debated issue since 1987, the year Tucson officials released a study anticipating an increase in population and traffic in the area.

Broadway is one of the busiest traffic corridors in Tucson. A recommendation made last month by a citizens task force suggests increasing the road to six lanes with additional lanes for bikes and new sidewalks.

Opponents of the expansion have warned there could be unanticipated problems with any construction plan based on results from a 28-year-old transportation study.

The public will have a chance to comment on the proposed Broadway expansion at a meeting Thursday, April 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sabbar Shrine Hall on 450 S. Tucson Blvd.
