The Phoenix suburb of Buckeye was the fastest-growing Arizona municipality and the ninth fastest-growing in the country in 2011-12, the U.S. Census Bureau reported Thursday.
Buckeye, which is on the western edge of Phoenix, had a population of 54,542 on July 1, 2012, a 4.14 percent increase, the Census Bureau reported.
The annual report on the 15 fastest-growing municipalities and the 15 largest cities listed Phoenix as the nation's sixth largest, with a population of 1.49 million, an increase of 1.7 percent.
The Census Bureau report said Tucson was 33rd largest, with a population of 524,295, an increase of 0.2 percent in 2011-12.
Five other Arizona cities were in the top 100, all Phoenix suburbs, topped by Mesa, 38th largest with 452,084 residents. Chandler was ranked 80th, Glendale 87th, Scottsdale 94th and Gilbert 97th.
The report said eight of the 15 fastest-growing municipalities in the country were in Texas, led by San Marcos, with a growth rate of 4.9 percent in 2011-12. San Marcos is between Austin and San Antonio.
