International Migratory Bird Day along San Pedro River

Saturday is International Migratory Bird Day, and what better place to celebrate than in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, considered a crown jewel of birding.

The San Pedro is recognized as a "globally important bird area" because of its year-round access to water and species of plants that are vital for birds.

It is an important flyway for a variety of avian species, migrating birds who use it as a regular route they can count on.

Paul Green, executive director of the Tucson Audubon Society, says visitors to the San Pedro River southeast of Tucson can usually find an amazing variety of birds.

"Having a running, flowing water in the desert with good vegetation makes it a very special place for bird," Green says.
