Weather Service: Heavy Flood Potential Through Friday

Moist and unstable air mean flooding is possible anytime, anywhere.

The National Weather Service issued an unusually long warning Wednesday about potential flash flooding. Forecasters say heavy rain with flooding potential could strike Southern Arizona any time between now and Friday night.

Meteorologist Aaron Hardin says the atmosphere contains almost 2 inches of potential rainfall, and the only question is when and where it will fall. "It's tough to say where individual storms are going to be, but if they do form we are confident they're going to be very heavy rainers," he said.

Tucsonans are accustomed to late afternoon thunderstorms at this time of the year, but the weather service says tonight's weather activity could extend well past midnight.

The Weather Service says some areas could receive up to an inch of rain in 15 minutes.
