More than one-third of households in Tucson are considered housing cost burdened.
An ordinance that Tucson’s mayor and city council passed on last year will be back on the table in September. The measure would forbid property owners from denying a rental application from someone based on their source of income.
The measure would protect renters who pay using alimony, housing vouchers and other sources.
Before the measure makes it back to the mayor and council, the city will hold two public meetings to get feedback.
Ernesto Portillo with the Tucson Department of Housing and Development said that source of income protection is part of the city’s plan to create more affordable housing.
"We at HCD believe that sources of income protection would open up more housing possibilities for individuals and for families," Portillo said.
